Another Shaw Update. (This time it's good news.)
Well, this is more of a “Bad New for Telus” post.
With Telus adding its 16Mbps service Shaw has responded by increasing network speeds by up to 50% on certain packages. Mine being one.
Shaw’s High Speed Extreme-I is now 15Mbps. Plus ready boost. For small transfers I am getting more than 22Mbps. Well, unless it is peak hours.
I am still waiting for that node split…
Shaw Update
Finally some good news on the Shaw front.
I confirmed today that they intend to split my node. It is in the queue.
Whew!!!
It was bad enough that for a while that even Telus was starting to look good.
iPhone Tumbling Tip
Tumbling from an iPhone using Tumblrette is really simple. But, here is a neat trick - enable Markdown syntax and you can get pretty fancy in the content you are posting without the limitations of the simple text editor on the phone.
Change the Editor in Account > Preferences and you are on your way.
I will post a little Markdown cheat sheet when I get the chance but if you can’t wait...

Tumbling Along Again
So I am tumbing along again.
I had a small break due to the removal of my wisdom and the passing of a dear friend, Doloros.
Stay tuned for some cool news involving iPhone apps and crowd sourcing.
The Neat Company
People still send paper and paper sucks: it gets tea cup stains on it and it won’t fit in my iPhone.
Enter NeatWorks.
Scan your documents (and other stuff) and add a dash of OCR. Use your own scanner or a PDF. It creates a DB with all your info in it. All in it is pretty useful.
Get a copy. It will help you keep that New Year’s resolution…
Speed tests to Spokane, WA.
As you may have noticed I switched the server that I test with from Calgary to Spokane, WA. For some reason only the server in Spokane is fast enough to handle Speed Boost so it gives the best results when the connection is good. If the connection is poor I usually test from multiple sources or fall back on the Shaw speed test.
Even though Extreme-I is supposed to max out at 10Mbps with...
Internet = Really Slow
Yeah. Shaw has come and gone and my Internet is still really slow.
I called. They want to send out another Tech tomorrow.
I hit an all new low tonight: 1.2Mbps.
Ugh.
Shaw is coming today...
So some Shaw Tech is coming to my house today (in theory between 4 and 6).
What a joke.
I already explained to them that there is no point. The problem starts closer to 6 and is unpredictable. Coming over and plugging in will do nothing.
If there was anything close to the speed that they can offer I would dump their service in a heartbeat.
Thinking about it makes me made.
But what choice do I...
There is nothing "High Speed" about 1.7Mbps
There is nothing “High Speed” about 1.7Mbps.
There is nothing “Extreme” about 1.7Mbps.
Unless you consider it Extremely slow.
Look, I don’t expect Shaw to give me some sort of refund on my bill. I am not saying my service was interrupted. I didn’t even raise my voice the first two times that I called in. But, come on. Don’t tell me that sending a tech...
So I called Shaw again today...
So I called Shaw again today…
It turns out that my suffering and anecdotal evidence is not quite enough to get them to split the node at my house. I can’t say I necessarily blame them - I would want proof too. That is why there are so many links to SpeedTest.net on my blog.
I do have proof.
But they want me to monitor it for the next couple of days.
You know my Rogers Internet...
Plastic Logic Reader
I heard about the Plastic Logic Reader a while ago but just recently had a chance to take a look at some videos of their product.
All I have to say is wow. (See the picture below.)
